Create and Play

This term, we created our own snowflakes inside whilst it was snowing outside! Snowflakes were made using a range of washi tape and sparkles, and bare winter trees were created using monochrome card, paper and wool. Week two’s focus was snowdrops and we talked about how these flowers – associated with the onset of spring – are carefully designed to pop up through frosty ground. It was lovely to hear how the children had been spotting them after our sessions! Our tuff trays became duck ponds in week three and we learnt how many ducks and swans migrate from other countries to the UK. 

Binoculars came in handy for RSPB bird week, with each child making their own decorated pair. They also enjoyed the challenge of digging for gold in our goldfinch-inspired tuff tray. In week five, we discussed how to spot resident swans and the children used their handprints to create feathers for their own swan collage. Week six was all about Valentine’s Day, with mini hearts to scoop, pour, collect and thread and pink playdough to mould, stretch, roll and cut. There was a selection of card and paper to create personalised Valentine’s cards and special little love bugs!

Music and Move

In Music and Move we focused on the season of winter, singing action and counting songs about snowdrops, snowflakes, rain, swans, ducks, frogs, squirrels, owls, keeping warm and Valentine’s Day. We marched around the room with the conga line dance, follow the leader and marching songs and enjoyed freeze dances.

Scarves and ribbons were used for dancing songs as well as to create limbo sticks, the effect of wind, peekaboo hideouts and magic carpets.  The parachute was used as a boat; as a canopy for sleeping bunnies; and to throw balls around the room, animals up to space or as a plate to wibble wobbly jelly around! We popped bubbles to seasonal melodies and enjoyed free dance at the end of every session.
