Here's what we got up to at Preschool art and Music!
Create and Play
This term, we continued to think about animals that hibernate and made mini hibernaculums for hedgehogs. It was lovely to overhear the children playing at being ‘hedgehogs’ in the soft play tunnel after the session.
We also focused on crafts and sensory play linked to animals that we see more often in the autumn time, such as squirrels, owls, foxes and badgers – the squirrel playground, autumn soup mixing station, monochrome foam, orange oobleck and snowy wood were very popular!
The children experimented with a range of tools and mixed media to create different effects, such as ripped paper, oil pastels, playdough, feathers, wallpaper, wool, seeds, tape and tissue paper. In the final weeks of term, we focused on robins and reindeer – animals traditionally associated with Christmas time, and had magical fun with shiny star decorating, feather-embellished robins, rocking reindeers, Christmas tree cards and scooping and mixing fragrantly festive reindeer food.
Music and Move
Our seasonal songs focused on autumn leaves, autumn treasures, the autumn weather and animals that are more visible in the autumn time…or that hibernate away! We sang about little hedgehogs, hiding bats, cold robins and became owls, foxes and squirrels – with the very popular Squirrel Freeze Dance song! The children caught bubbles in their scarves – imagining they were leaves and snowflakes – and swayed their scarves like they were blowing in the wind.
They created rope snakes to walk along, balanced bean bags on their heads, and marched around the room to the Grand Old Duke of York and the Christmas Conga. Other festive songs included Jingle Bells (accompanied by bells, of course), Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer and When Santa Got Stuck Up The Chimney and the we all enjoyed grooving to Rockin’ Robin and the Christmas Freeze Dance – when we were transported to the North Pole.
As well as regular boat trips on the parachute, the children enjoyed sleigh rides on it and moving along to the Parachute Fa La La dance.
