Watercolours: Our Oceans

Session Information

Age Requirement: 5 – 10 years

Date: Wednesday 5th August

Time: 10am – 3pm

Cost: £50 per child (sibling discounts available)

Get ready for a calm and creative holiday art club inspired by the ocean, where children will explore the beauty of watercolour painting. Throughout the day, they’ll create their own whale sharks, ocean scenes and sea turtles, using a range of watercolour techniques to bring their artwork to life. Children will experiment with wet-on-wet painting, watercolour resist with pastels and playful splatter techniques to create texture, movement and depth. This relaxing, process-led session encourages creativity, confidence and self-expression, resulting in a collection of vibrant, ocean-inspired artworks to take home.

What they’ll take away

  • Watercolour whale shark that moves
  • Framed ocean-inspired watercolour scene
  • Watercolour turtle artwork and 3D turtle puppet

What they’ll get up to

10am – 10.30am: Make a Printed Wooden Badge Icebreaker

After introductions, children will design and create their own wearable wooden badge using stencils and acrylic pens. They can personalise their piece with patterns, symbols or initials—something that represents them or could be gifted to a new friend. This gentle, creative activity helps everyone settle in, start conversations and feel part of the group.

10.30am – 11.30am: Watercolour Whale Shark That Moves

Children will create their own moving watercolour whale shark, combining painting and simple construction techniques. They’ll begin by using pastels to draw and design the distinctive patterns of the whale shark, then layer watercolour over the top using resist techniques to make their markings stand out. Once their artwork is complete, they’ll carefully cut out their shapes and use split pins to join sections, allowing their whale shark to move and come to life.

11.30am – 12pm: Snack Time

12pm – 1pm: Framed Ocean-Inspired Watercolour Scene

Children will create a framed ocean-inspired watercolour scene, capturing the colours, movement and atmosphere of the sea. Using techniques such as wet-on-wet, layering and splatter, they’ll experiment with blending colours to create depth and texture. Once complete, their artwork will be carefully mounted into a frame, creating a beautiful finished piece ready to take home and display.

1pm – 1.30pm: Lunch

1.30pm – 3pm: Watercolour Turtles

Children will create their own watercolour turtle, bringing together all the techniques they’ve explored throughout the day. They’ll use watercolour washes, splatter techniques, resist methods and collage to create bold patterns, texture and movement. They’ll also create a 3D turtle using simple paper folding techniques with their painted watercolour paper, mounting it onto a lollipop stick so it can “swim.”
