Sculpture: Pumpkins, Mushrooms & Autumn Clay Creations

Session Information

Age Requirement: 5–10 years

Date: Thursday 29th October

Time: 10am–3pm

Cost: £50 per child (sibling discounts available)

Celebrate autumn through sculpture in this hands-on holiday art club, where children will explore the wonderful world of air dry clay and simple wire sculpture. Inspired by pumpkins, woodland mushrooms, autumn leaves and seasonal treasures, they’ll discover how to shape, texture and build their own 3D creations.

Throughout the day, children will learn a range of sculpting techniques including pinch pots, hand-building and joining clay. They’ll experiment with creating realistic textures, adding decorative details and turning simple shapes into imaginative autumn-inspired sculptures. Alongside their clay work, they’ll create playful wire sculptures decorated with colourful beads and autumn colours.

Perfect for children who enjoy making, building and getting their hands messy, this creative day develops fine motor skills, confidence and imagination while encouraging children to experiment with different sculptural materials.

What they’ll take away

  • Air dry clay pumpkin pinch pots
  • Handmade clay pumpkins and woodland mushrooms
  • Decorative wire sculptures inspired by autumn
  • A collection of sculpting skills and creative ideas to continue exploring at home

What they’ll get up to

10am–10.30am: Make a Printed Wooden Badge Icebreaker

After introductions, children will design and create their own wearable wooden badge using stencils and acrylic pens. They can decorate their badge with pumpkins, mushrooms, autumn leaves or simple Halloween-inspired patterns before wearing it throughout the day.

This relaxed creative activity helps everyone settle in, get to know one another and feel part of the group before we begin sculpting.

10.30am–11.30am: Air Dry Clay Pumpkin Pinch Pots

Children will learn how to create pinch pots using air dry clay, transforming them into beautiful pumpkin-shaped bowls. They’ll discover how to shape the clay with their fingers, add pumpkin ridges, stems and simple textures before experimenting with decorating their creations using clay tools and natural impressions.

This activity introduces the foundations of clay hand-building while encouraging creativity and confidence.

11.30am–12pm: Snack Time

12pm–1pm: Clay Pumpkins & Woodland Mushrooms

Children will sculpt a collection of autumn-inspired clay models, including pumpkins, toadstool mushrooms and other woodland treasures.

They’ll learn how to roll, shape and join clay securely while experimenting with different textures to create realistic pumpkin grooves, mushroom caps and woodland details. Children will be encouraged to add their own imaginative touches, making every collection completely unique.

1pm–1.30pm: Lunch

1.30pm–2.30pm: Autumn Wire Sculptures

Children will experiment with wire sculpture using thick, bendable wire that’s easy to shape by hand. They can twist and bend the wire into pumpkins, mushrooms, autumn leaves or abstract seasonal designs before decorating their sculptures with colourful beads in warm autumn tones.

This introduces children to drawing in three dimensions while exploring line, balance and form.

2.30pm–3pm: Autumn Sculpture Challenge

We’ll finish the day with an open-ended sculpture challenge, giving children the opportunity to create one final autumn-inspired clay model using the techniques they’ve learnt throughout the day.

Whether they choose another pumpkin, a woodland creature, an acorn, a snail or something entirely from their imagination, this final session encourages independent creativity while celebrating everything they’ve discovered during the workshop.
