Printmaking
Patterns and Playful Prints at Goldfinch Create & Play
This term at Goldfinch, our after-school art club was all about printmaking, pattern and creative experimentation. Across the weeks, children explored a wide range of exciting printing techniques, discovering how shapes, colour and repetition can completely transform a piece of artwork.
One of our favourite things to witness throughout the term was the excitement when children peeled back a stencil or removed a layer of tape to reveal their final print underneath. So many gasps, surprised smiles and excited voices around the table as designs appeared for the very first time.
Exploring Print Through Play
We began the term creating our own wooden badges using vinyl shapes and patterns, introducing children to layering, composition and simple graphic design. The badges quickly became wearable mini artworks, each one completely personal to the child who made it.
Throughout the weeks, children experimented with:
- Stencil printing techniques
- Creating scrap material stamps from recycled resources
- Exploring symmetry, repetition and texture
- Printing onto both paper and fabric
- Using our new blow pens to create vibrant printed effects and backgrounds
- Designing playful split pin insects filled with pattern and movement
- Creating tote bag prints and tape-resist T-shirts
The tape T-shirts were a particular highlight. The reveal moment, when the tape was peeled away to expose bold graphic lines underneath, was full of excitement and surprise.
Creative Freedom and Individual Ideas
What we loved most about this term was how confidently children began to experiment with their own ideas. Some chose careful repeating patterns, while others layered colours freely or transformed simple shapes into imaginative designs.
Printmaking naturally encourages exploration because every print behaves slightly differently. Sometimes colours blend unexpectedly, shapes overlap in surprising ways, or textures appear where children least expect them. Rather than aiming for perfection, the children embraced the process.
Watching children gain confidence in trying, testing and experimenting is always one of the most rewarding parts of our sessions.
