Recycled Animal Makers
This February and March, our Goldfinch Kids Art Club explored creativity through sustainability with our Recycled Animal Makers theme. Over six weeks, children transformed everyday recycled materials into imaginative artworks, developing creative confidence, problem-solving skills and a love for making.
Our children’s art classes focused on hands-on learning, encouraging young artists to design, build and experiment using cardboard, paper and reclaimed materials. The result? A studio full of unique, characterful creations, from crocodiles and snakes to cats and penguins!
What the Children Created
Moving Split Pin Animals
Using simple mechanics, children created articulated animals with moving parts. This introduced basic engineering concepts while supporting storytelling and imaginative play.
3D Animals and Marvellous Mushrooms!
Throughout the term, children explored 3D art techniques, learning how to build, balance and layer materials to create strong, sculptural forms. They created little garden birds with moving wings. Next we moved onto our main animal creations of the terms and even brought out the spray cans to the delight of everyone!
Easter Crafts: Recycled Baskets for the Egg Hunt
To finish the term, we embraced the season with Easter-themed crafts. Each child made their own cardboard Easter basket, ready for egg hunts and celebrations.
This recycled Easter project brought together everything they had learned, construction, creativity and decoration resulting in beautiful, functional handmade baskets.
Skills Children Developed
- Fine motor skills through cutting, assembling and joining materials
- Spatial awareness and 3D design understanding
- Confidence in their creative ideas and decision-making
- Problem-solving and design thinking skills
- Awareness of sustainability and the value of reusing materials

They’ll experiment with a variety of printmaking techniques, learning how to layer, press, and transfer designs onto both paper and fabric. Each session encourages exploration, discovery, and creative freedom, resulting in a collection of unique printed artworks to treasure.
