Architecture and Place!
This term has been about imagining ourselves as Architects and Engineers, through the mediums of fabulous scrapstore finds, card templates and glue guns!
It’s been a playful way for the kids to get to grips with spatial awareness and a sense of scale. From fabulous couch designs which became the main feature in a living room, to hammocks, swivel chairs, bunk beds, indoor slides and climbing walls, there was no limit to their creativity.
From inside to outside, the kids developed garden extensions and play parks. We had everything from ball pits, to water slides and trampolines, elements from every kid’s dream outdoor space. If they could imagine it, they could make it. It’s been great seeing their confidence grow using glue guns, we use cold melt glue sticks and large bostik glue guns, better at avoiding little burns.
From Architects to Engineers the next challenge was bridge building. It was great to see their problem slowing skills in full effect as they developed their stable structures and worked out what distance they could span without bridge collapse!
For the last two weeks they will be given wooden peg dolls to dress and paint, the best part about this is they will have little characters to take home and continue imaginative play. We love this term as the kids go home with creations that they can interact and play with for months after. If we can squeeze in our last activity of Feb, we’ll be working on a group abstract creation. They’ve enjoyed being Architects so much that we’ve spent longer working on house design than anticipated, the best outcome, kids getting lost in their creative process! Scroll down to see snapshots of their creations.
