Architecture and Place
This term at Kids Art Club has been all about Architecture and Place, imagining ourselves as Architects and Engineers through the wonderfully creative mediums of fabulous scrapstore finds, card templates, recycled materials, and of course… glue guns!
It has been such a playful and engaging way for the children to explore spatial awareness, shape, and a sense of scale. We began by focusing on the details, with the children designing all the furniture they could possibly imagine for their dream homes. From tiny tables and cosy beds to imaginative inventions, their ideas were thoughtful, inventive, and full of personality.
Next, the boxes came out and it was time to think bigger. The children moved on to constructing the homes themselves, carefully considering not only the buildings but also the spaces around them, gardens, pathways, and outdoor areas. It was wonderful to see how naturally they began to understand the relationship between structure, space, and environment.
We also introduced a surprise creative challenge using shuttlecocks, encouraging the children to transform these recycled objects into something entirely new. The results were brilliant, birds, bees, ghosts, and all sorts of unexpected creations emerged, each one completely unique. It was a fantastic way to stretch their creativity and show how even the simplest materials can become something magical.
From Architects to Engineers, the next challenge was bridge building. This was a real highlight, as the children’s problem-solving skills came into full effect. They experimented with balance, strength, and design as they developed stable structures and tested how far they could span without their bridges collapsing.
In our final week, we offered an exciting selection of materials for a more open-ended session, giving the children the freedom to decide what they wanted to create. We love offering glue guns at Goldfinch because they provide such independence, allowing children to build confidently, follow their ideas, and bring their imaginations to life.
It has been such a joyful term of designing, building, exploring, and creating, and we are so proud of everything the children have made. Most of all, we love seeing the confidence that grows when children are trusted with real tools, real materials, and the freedom to experiment.
