Life in our oceans and rivers
Welcome back to kids art club, summer’s here and we’ve turned to our coastlines and rivers for inspiration. The heatwave has everyone dreaming of being in water!
What creatures have we spotted recently in rock pools and along the coastline? Using paint sticks the kids explored mark making and using a hole punch they created patterned scales. Jellyfish, Octopus, squid and fish were just some of the colourful sea creature creations.
Next up, a conversation about plastics and how they end up in the ocean. Inspired by ocean animals each child created a plastic mosaic from small plastic parts collected from the Scrapstore. Turning recovered plastic into art. The kids loved diving into the box and collecting little bits to reassemble. We had axolotls, giant japanese crabs, squids, fish, jellyfish, octopus, coral reefs and some fabulous abstract art.
Onto an activity that encourages mindfulness, pattern making. Children were encouraged to draw and colour patterned fish on black paper. The perfect way to relax after a hot day at school! One of our favourite artists when it comes to pattern making is Clare Youngs, creating card sea creatures, adding patterns inspired by camouflage or cryptic colouration. Next they added split pins to make their sea creatures move. Sharing facts about the largest fish in the ocean, the whale shark was a great way to get everyone’s creativity flowing! We spent the following week animating our creatures with stop motion animation. Follow our instagram reels to take a look at some of the animated ocean creatures.
Ocean inspired squish pillows! I’m sure as a parent you’ve heard about squishmellows, now it was time to create their own squish pillows. A very satisfying activity, squishing toy stuffing into an envelope, decorating and taping shut for maximum squish!
We wrapped up the term making our own wrapping paper, ocean inspired of course!
Next up: We welcome everyone back to Goldfinch after the summer to join us for our Sept/Oct exploring all things Watercolour!
