Sculpture

A Term of Clay, Cardboard and Creative Thinking

This term in Kids Art Club, we stepped away from the drawing board and into the exciting world of three-dimensional art. Over eight weeks, our young artists explored how sculptures are built, shaped and brought to life using a wonderful variety of materials including air-dry clay, wire, cardboard and recycled objects.

Throughout the term, the children developed their creative confidence while learning new sculptural techniques. From building strong structures and experimenting with form to adding texture, colour and decorative details, every session encouraged imagination, problem-solving and plenty of hands-on making.

Working with Clay

Our biggest project of the term was working with air-dry clay. By allowing each piece time to dry between sessions, the children experienced the full creative process, returning to paint and finish their work once it had hardened.

They created beautiful pinch pots perfect for tiny succulents, alongside decorative hanging leaf-print medallions inspired by nature. Once dry, each sculpture was carefully painted using acrylics and watercolours before receiving its final finishing touches, giving every piece its own unique personality.

Recycled Creations

Recycled cardboard tubes sparked endless imagination as they were transformed into an incredible collection of creatures. From turtles, butterflies and buzzing bees to bears, guinea pigs and many more wonderful inventions, no two creations were ever the same. Posca pens provided the perfect finishing details, adding colourful patterns, expressive faces and playful character to every sculpture.

Drawing in the Air

Wire sculpture introduced the children to a completely different way of creating art. Using soft sculpture wire, colourful pipe cleaners and beads, they discovered how lines could become three-dimensional forms. Fidget toys and brightly coloured fish proved especially popular, with each child experimenting with different shapes, twists and colour combinations to create sculptures that seemed to float in the air.

Cardboard Sculpting

We also explored the possibilities of paper and cardboard sculpture, creating miniature potted plants complete with tiny cardboard succulents to take home. As always, the children’s own ideas quickly took over, and alongside the original project came an array of wonderfully imaginative creations, including hot dogs, fish and many other unique designs. It was fantastic to see their creativity leading the way.

A Seaside Finale

To finish the term, we celebrated with a seaside-inspired session, creating miniature aquariums and rock pools. The children filled sensory tubes with colourful stones, shells and beautiful sparkling jewels, kindly donated by Kemp Jewellers just down the road. This proved to be one of the most popular sessions of the term, combining creativity with sensory exploration to create magical underwater worlds to take home.

It has been a fantastic eight weeks of building, shaping, experimenting and making. Most importantly, the children discovered that sculpture can be created from almost anything with a little imagination. We have loved watching their confidence grow and seeing their unique ideas come to life, and we can’t wait to see what they create next term!
