Following Their Ideas: From Turtles to Ninjas
At Goldfinch Create & Play, we love starting with a theme. It might be inspired by nature, a season, or a particular material or technique, something to spark curiosity and get everyone making.
In this session, we were exploring print and pattern, creating turtles using cardboard shapes, hand made stencils, paint and simple layering techniques. As always, the table quickly filled with a wonderful mix of colours, textures and ideas. Some children enjoyed following the turtle theme, carefully building their designs and experimenting with pattern and print.
And then something brilliant happened.
One child took the same materials and made… a ninja.
It’s one of our favourite parts of what we do. That moment when a child feels confident enough to take an idea and make it their own. For some, having a clear starting point is exactly what they need, it builds confidence and helps them get going. For others, it’s just the beginning of something completely different.
We hold space for both.
Our sessions are designed to gently guide, not direct. We’re there to support, suggest and encourage, but also to step back and let creativity lead when it wants to.
Because it’s never really about making the same thing.
It’s about giving children the confidence to explore their own ideas, in their own way.
