Creativity, skill building and personal style at this terms Teen Sewing!
Over the past term, our Teen Sewing Course at Goldfinch has been a wonderful exploration of creativity, independence and skill-building. Designed to introduce the fundamentals of hand sewing, the course gave students the opportunity to learn practical techniques while developing their own unique style.
Across the weeks, the group built confidence with essential sewing skills, from threading needles and tying knots to mastering stitches such as running stitch, backstitch, whipstitch and blanket stitch. They also explored different materials, working primarily with cotton, felt and fabric.
While the core project focused on designing and making a cotton tote bag or T-shirt embellishments, what made this course particularly special was the freedom within it. Led by Sarah, the sessions are intentionally open and supportive, allowing teens to either follow the term’s theme or develop their own ideas and projects.
As the term progressed, this flexibility really came to life. Some students chose to take their new skills further by customising T-shirts, bags and even masks, while others brought in their own garments from home to embellish and rework. It was fantastic to see previous projects being revisited and completed, alongside entirely new creations emerging.
Each piece reflected the individual creativity of the maker, from carefully stitched details to bold, expressive embellishments. The studio became a space not just for learning, but for experimentation, problem-solving and self-expression.
It’s been a term full of focus, creativity and individuality, and we’re so proud of everything the group has achieved. ✨
Next term the teens will be exploring illustration!
This course is designed for teens interested in exploring the world of illustration. Throughout the term, participants will learn essential illustration techniques, develop their own creative style, and apply their skills to real-world projects.
