Ocean Animal Construction Summer Holiday Art Club

Construction: Ocean Animal Creations

Session Information

Age Requirement: 5 – 10 years

Date: Wednesday 26th August

Time: 10am – 3pm

Cost: £50 per child (sibling discounts available)

During our imaginative construction-focused holiday art club, children will design and build their very own ocean animals using recycled materials. Inspired by colourful sea creatures, they’ll use cardboard construction, cutting, layering and glue guns (with guidance) to bring their unique sculptures to life—creating anything from whales and turtles to fish and fantastical underwater creatures. They’ll explore shape, structure and bold decorative patterns, adding playful details to make each piece truly one of a kind. To complete their creations, children can add painted elements and finishing touches. This eco-friendly project encourages creativity, problem-solving and hands-on making in a fun, supportive environment, resulting in a striking piece of art to take home and display.

What they’ll take away

  • Cardboard ocean animals
  • 2D split pin ocean animals
  • Paper orb turtles

What they’ll get up to

10am – 10.30am: Make a Printed Wooden Badge Icebreaker

After introductions, children will design and create their own wearable wooden badge using stencils and acrylic pens. They can personalise their piece with patterns, symbols or initials—something that represents them or could be gifted to a new friend. This gentle, creative activity helps everyone settle in, start conversations and feel part of the group.

10.30am – 11.30am: Cardboard Ocean Animals

Children will design and build their own cardboard ocean animal using a mix of recycled and scrapstore materials. Starting with simple shapes, they’ll construct their creature using cutting, layering and joining techniques, exploring how to create structure and form. They’ll then bring their designs to life with paint, collage and found materials such as bottle tops, paper scraps and textures to add pattern and detail. From whales and turtles to imaginative sea creatures, each child will create a unique, playful sculpture full of personality.

11.30am – 12pm: Snack Time

12pm – 1pm: Cardboard Ocean Animals Continued

1pm – 1.30pm: Lunch

1.30pm – 2.30pm: 2D Split Pin Ocean Animals

Children will create their own moving ocean animals using card and split pins, bringing a playful, interactive element to their artwork. They’ll design and cut out simple shapes for fins, tails and bodies, then join the pieces together using split pins so their creatures can move and “swim.” Using Posca pens, they’ll add bold patterns, colours and details, exploring mark-making and decorative design to give their animals personality.

2.30pm – 3pm: Paper Orb Turtles

Lastly, children will make paper orb turtles, transforming flat paper into simple 3D creatures using folding techniques. They’ll decorate their paper with patterns and colours before carefully shaping and assembling it into rounded forms, creating a playful, sculptural effect. This activity introduces them to turning 2D materials into 3D designs, giving their turtles volume and personality while building confidence in creative making.
