Spring!
Week One: Badgers
With badger cubs usually being born from March onwards, this gave us the perfect reason to find out more about these nocturnal animals. Children could use potatoes to create their very own badger prints. They could also thread black and white pasta and beads to create monochrome jewellery. Black and white animals were camouflaged in shaving foam then washed clean towards the end of the sessions. Finally, time for badger mask craft!
Week Two: Sheep
At the beginning of spring when the weather is warming up, female sheep (ewes) give birth to lambs so this week we were celebrating all things sheep! Children could make their own fluffy sheep on green pastureland with cotton wool, string, tissue paper, paint sticks and flower cutters. They could also use stencils to create pictures of everything farm-related, including sheep, tractors, pigs and horses. In one tuff tray, lambs could be found hiding amongst the green rice and under the green grass, and a crushed-weetabix farm was in our other tuff tray, complete with multi-coloured tractors, sheep pens and farm animals galore!
Week Three: Frogs
Frogspawn appears in ponds in early spring so this week we were celebrating frogs. Children could create their very own frog collages, which had suckers to stick onto walls and windows! They could also create mini 3D frogs on decorated lily pads. Books and resources taught about the frog life cycle and we sang about five little speckled frogs.
Week Four: Spring Equinox
This week we were thinking about all things sunny due to the impending date of the spring equinox, when there is an equal amount of daytime and night-time, marking the official beginning of spring. Children could make shiny foil suns using different shades of yellow, red and orange. They could also create multicoloured sunsets on sticky contact paper. Mini suns, white clouds and spring flowers could be found amongst yellow rice in one tuff tray; and stars, moonstones and other treasures could be found hidden in the moon dust of our night-time tuff tray.
Week Five: Butterflies
With the arrival of beautiful spring sunshine, you are likely to spot butterflies emerging to enjoy the spring blossoms. This week, we explored the life cycle of a butterfly, with caterpillars to dig out from green jelly and butterflies to discover in the blue sky of rice! Pastel paints were used to create symmetrical butterfly paintings and flower bouquets were created from multicoloured card and flower/butterfly stampers as gifts for mums on Mother’s Day or for someone else special. We read the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar and played sleeping caterpillars!
