Illustration, Observation & Shrink Plastic Creations
This term at Teen Art Club, our young artists explored the world of illustration through drawing, observation and creative experimentation. Across the weeks, students developed their own artistic styles while learning how to carefully observe shape, colour, texture and detail from the natural world around them.
Working with watercolours, oil pastels, coloured pencil and fine liner, the group created a fantastic range of illustrated studies inspired by birds, insects, frogs and woodland creatures. From detailed moth drawings and expressive bees to vibrant frogs and elegant swans, each piece reflected the individuality and imagination of the artist behind it.
One of the highlights of the term was experimenting with shrink plastic, a huge success with the group. Students carefully illustrated tiny designs before watching them magically shrink down in the heat process, transforming into miniature charms and keepsakes.
Alongside technical skills, the term encouraged patience, close observation and confidence in creative decision making. Students explored:
- Nature illustration and observational drawing
- Watercolour and oil pastel techniques
- Layering colour and texture
- Creating miniature shrink plastic artworks
- Developing composition and personal style
- Cutting, refining and presenting finished pieces
As always at Goldfinch, the sessions focused on creativity without pressure, giving young artists the freedom to experiment, take risks and enjoy the process of making art in a relaxed and supportive environment.
We loved seeing the confidence and individuality that emerged across the term and can’t wait to see what next term’s Teen Art Club brings.
Next term the teens will be exploring `watercolours!
Focusing on illustration techniques, utilising watercolour, the teens will create a series of images that convey an emotive narrative within a handcrafted concertina book.
Throughout this process, we allow our students to take the lead, fostering an environment where their imaginations can thrive. By providing a relaxed, calm, and friendly atmosphere, we encourage them to chat, share stories, and showcase their artwork.
This strengthens their self-confidence and boosts their creative abilities.
June/July Teens Art Classes are all up for booking.
