Watercolour Stories
This term Kids Art Clubs was filled with imagination, exploration, and vibrant creativity. Children immersed themselves in a series of watercolour art activities designed to nurture self-confidence, self-expression, and creative thinking.
Storytelling through watercolours
The journey began with storytelling using watercolours. Children developed their own narratives and brought them to life by creating paper mobile characters. Fold-out watercolour books provided a playful introduction to watercolour techniques, allowing everyone to experiment with colour and form.
From 2D to 3D: Pop-up card exploration
Next, the children transformed their watercolour creations from two-dimensional artworks into three-dimensional pop-up cards. Pastels were introduced to explore pastel resist techniques with watercolours, resulting in vibrant and textured effects. Themes ranged from under the sea adventures and enchanted forests to bustling farms and football fields, showcasing the children’s diverse interests and imaginations.
Developing mobile stories
Older children took their storytelling further by developing mobile stories within their homemade books. They designed and illustrated key characters, then painted and assembled them into mobiles to hang at home. This activity encouraged independence and boosted confidence as each child saw their ideas take shape.
Younger children, inspired by conversations about the autumn eclipse, created lunar mobiles.
Owls and Autumn inspiration
Owls became a major influence this term. After learning about the five UK owl species, everyone created giant owl collages using pastels and repurposed watercolour paper. Each child crafted their own unique owlet, adding to a vibrant collective display.
A visit to the scrapstore inspired the next activity: autumn sorting trays. Children used plasticine, paper, hole punches, scissors, glue, and beads to create tiny autumn themed treasures. This open-ended activity encouraged collecting, sorting, and discovery, perfect for filling trays with conkers and other seasonal finds.
Spooky portraits
Finally to end off the term, we got creative and made spooky portraits using egg boxes, collage materials, and markers! They cut and shaped pieces of egg boxes to make funny or scary faces, ice cream cones, vases and foxes!
